I had a conversation with a friend the other week, and she said to me, “Your generation is tired of hearing what God is like. They want to know what He does.”
So, let me show you. Let me tell you.
We are called to be salt + light.
Matthew 5:13-16 (MSG)
Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
In the spirit of honesty in these blog posts, I really feel like the enemy has been attacking me for writing. The enemy’s been telling me that I’m making the wrong decision to share this part of my life with the internet. I know those are the enemies lies and that he will use anything.
I’ve learned that people are quick to tell you that what you do is wrong. But if God spoke it to you – how can it be wrong? If I’m telling the truth and showing God’s Truth through it – how can it be wrong?
1 Chronicles 29:14-19
Everything comes from you; all we’re doing is giving back what we’ve been given from your generous hand. As far as you’re concerned, we’re homeless, shiftless wanderers like our ancestors, our lives mere shadows, hardly anything to us. God, our God, all these materials—these piles of stuff for building a house of worship for you, honouring your Holy Name—it all came from you! It was all yours in the first place! I know, dear God, that you care nothing for the surface—you want us, our true selves—and so I have given from the heart, honestly and happily.
I prayed hard and sought wise counsel about how to be authentic and real in this season of my life and what that looked like. Friend, if we were together in person I’d love to tell you this story, and I’m sure you would see my eyes light up for the first time in months because of what God spoke to me.
“Write,” He said.
But again, people are quick to tell you that what you do is wrong. That I’ve been wrong to use words and a platform to process what happened in my life.
God’s greatest invitation in life for us is to be naked + unashamed.
Maybe that makes you uncomfortable. It makes me uncomfortable, too, but that’s how He intended it to be. It’s uncomfortable to be exposed. But we can’t follow God’s invitation to be free – to be naked and unashamed – if we want to please everyone.
As a people pleaser, I get the difficulty.
Do you know what rattles God? What rattles Him is when we bury what He’s given us. For me, it’s words. He gave me the ability to process through them. I’ve loved words since I was a young girl and I love the Word made flesh. I have a degree in communication studies – and I chose that major six years ago. He placed it on my heart and in my life before I knew what it was going to grow into – before I knew what He was going to bring me through in this life.
What has He given to you? What has He spoke to you?
God doesn’t want you to be silent about it. He gave us gifts for a reason. He placed things on our hearts for a reason. He speaks things to us for a reason. It’s okay to share about them and proclaim them.
This is why we’re called to be salt + light. We’re called to tell others who He is and show them what He does.
Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Let’s bring the light. Let’s go public. Let’s shine.
Blessings to you,
